Eugenia Tan
She/Her
Audio-Visual Technician, Novatech Creative Event Technology
Even in my final year of university, studying a Bachelor of Music majoring in Sonic Arts at the University of Adelaide, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I was interested in sound engineering but felt hesitant, unsure if it was the right path or if I had what it takes. Then I found an internship in a production role at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, and I decided to give it a go. That experience changed everything.
Being part of the production team opened my eyes to the energy, teamwork, and complexity behind live events. Helping bring an event to life—from technical setups to problem-solving on the ground—really sparked something in me. For the first time, I felt a clear direction in my career. I saw how exciting and dynamic the events industry could be, with each event presenting a unique challenge that demands creativity and quick thinking.
I’m now focusing on sound and lighting at Novatech. My experience has been dynamic, fast-paced, and incredibly rewarding. No two days are the same. I’ve worked on everything from smaller, intimate gigs to large-scale music events with thousands of attendees. Reflecting on my journey, I’ve learned that stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing every experience and opportunity is essential. Patience is key, as progress often takes time.
While the industry can be male-dominated, I have faced challenges and had to work extra hard to prove myself. I’m fortunate to have supportive mentors guiding me. To all women following this path, I’d say: stay confident, keep pushing forward, and let your confidence inspire positive outcomes.
